Safe Routes to School Summit

Hawaii advocates of bicycling and walking will join with statewide policy makers and government officials to convent the first-ever Hawaii Safe Routes to School Summit: A Gateway to Healthier, Happier Hawaii Communities.
The event is hosted by the Big Island based PATH - Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii with support from Kaiser Permanente Hawaii and the Communities Putting Prevention to Work Kauai Team, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Hawaii Department of Health.
The Summit will open with remarks by Lt. Governor Brian Schatz and feature a keynote address by national Safe Routes to School pioneer Deborah Hubsmith, Director of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership as well as a report by Hawaii Department of Transportation Highways Administrator Alvin Takeshita, P.E. highlighting recent successes in the Hawaii Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School program.
The Summit will focus on how Hawaii can leverage both federal funding and a more than a decade of policy and program successes to get more children safely walking and bicycling to school.

PEDS 21 Symposium: Ending Childhood Obesity in a Generation - Innovations in Practice

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention presents Weight of the Nation™ 2012, its national conference on obesity prevention and control. The theme for the 2012 conference is Moving Forward, Reversing the Trend.
Conference organizers will illustrate this theme through presentations—concurrent, plenary, poster or video—that emphasize how communities; early care and education facilities; medical care facilities; workplaces; states, territories, and tribes; and schools can change nutrition and physical activity environments to prevent and control obesity.
The conference will convene elected and appointed public policy makers; federal, tribal, state, local, and territorial public health practitioners; media and social marketing experts; and partners and researchers vested in obesity prevention and control.
Call for Proposals
Persons and organizations engaged in developing, implementing, and evaluating policy system and environmental strategies to address obesity are invited to submit proposals.
The proposals will be used to select track specific concurrent panelists and poster presentations.
Concurrent sessions will foster discussion among panelists and with the audience on the use of policy, system and environmental approaches (PSE) to promote dietary quality, increase physical activity and prevent obesity. The concurrent session tracks are: agriculture, access, and sustainability; built environment and transportation; early care and education; law and legal authorities; medical care; schools; states and communities; and workplaces. An overview of each track with instructions on proposal submissions is detailed below.
Poster sessions will feature traditional and film technology formats. As only a limited number of proposals will be selected for oral presentation, other highly rated proposals may be invited as posters.

Hawaii Food Policy Council "Farm to Fork" Teach-in Conference

The Hawaii Food Policy Council, with the support of Kaiser Permanente and the Small Planet Fund, will be hosting a statewide Food Policy Council Teach-In. Focused on the power and potential of Food Policy Councils, this teach-in will feature nationally renowned author and Food Policy Council guru Mark Winne, who will discuss how Food Policy Councils can uniquely serve Hawaii’s Food System stakeholders.
This teach-in is designed create a network for Hawaii’s Food System Stakeholders that will allow us to better address systemic problems in our food system and imagine innovative and collaborative solutions.
The second half of the teach-in is for those organizations and individuals who are interested in building the capacity of the Food Policy Council to serve Hawaii’s food system and their organizations.
Scholarships are available. Interested participants from other islands are encouraged to attend and travel stipends are available for those who apply.

Topics will include: grant writing, NIH grant submission requirements, NIH review process. This colloquium is ideal for new principal investigators and doctoral students.
